Today’s reading begins with a further description of land grants to the tribes of Israel and concludes with the grants of cities to the tribe of the Levites.
The tribe of the Levites had been tasked by the LORD to give service to the LORD in the Tabernacle. The Levites were the LORD’s portion among the people of Israel, and as such they were not granted a portion in the land of promise. Instead of land, the LORD granted to the Levites cities throughout the land grants given to the remaining tribes. Along with cities granted to various members of the tribe of Levi, the grants from each of the tribes included pastureland to permit the Levites to raise and keep their livestock.
After several chapters of describing the land, cities, and pastureland granted to the tribes of Israel, this reading concludes with these important words:
Thus the LORD gave to Israel all the land that he swore to give to their fathers. And they took possession of it and they settled there. And the LORD gave them rest on every side just as he had sworn to their fathers. Not one of all their enemies had withstood them, for the LORD had given all their enemies into their hands. Not one word of all the good promises that the LORD had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass. Joshua 21:43-45
